Remember to cleanse your hands before touching your tattoo!
Upon returning home: Uncover the bandage within 1-2 hours following your tattoo session. There’s no need to reapply a new bandage. It’s important to allow your tattoo to breathe, much like an open wound.
Use an antibacterial liquid soap to delicately cleanse your tattoo. Exercise caution and avoid any abrasive materials like washcloths that could potentially irritate the tattooed area. It’s best to use only your hands.
Gently pat your tattoo dry with a paper towel. Refrain from rubbing or using materials with rough textures.
During the initial 3-4 days: Apply a small quantity of lotion or ointment to your tattoo. Opt for an unscented lotion without alcohol, such as Cetaphil, or a tattoo-specific ointment that you know you’re not allergic to. Ensure your hands are clean before application, and avoid putting your fingers back into the ointment after touching your tattoo. Apply the ointment in a way that prevents excessive shine or greasiness, aiming for a thin layer. If any extra ointment remains, gently blot it off using a clean paper towel. Do not use substances like Vaseline, petroleum jelly, Neosporin, or Bag Balm. Cleanse, dry, and apply lotion or ointment 1-3 times per day, as necessary.
For the initial night, wrapping your tattoo in plastic wrap (saran wrap) can be beneficial to prevent sticking to your bed linens. However, avoid using cloth bandages or pads, as their fibers can adhere to the fresh tattoo and disrupt the healing process.
Wear soft, clean clothing over your tattoo for the initial 2 weeks—avoid anything that might cause irritation or abrasion. In the case of a foot tattoo, opt to go barefoot whenever possible. If footwear is necessary, wrap your clean tattoo in plastic wrap first, then cover it with a clean cotton sock before putting on your shoe. To prevent chafing and preserve your tattoo’s integrity, avoid sandals or flip-flops during this period.
Following the third or fourth day: Your tattoo will begin to peel, which is a normal part of the healing process. It’s essential not to pick at the peeling skin. Start using a mild, white, unscented lotion that is free of dyes and perfumes.
Maintain the application of lotion for a minimum of 2 weeks, applying it 1-2 times daily.
Precautions to Take
- Avoid Disturbing Your Tattoo: Refrain from picking, scratching, peeling, slapping, rubbing, or causing any irritation to your tattooed area.
- Showering is Permissible: You’re allowed to shower; however, avoid soaking your tattoo for a duration of 2 weeks. This means no swimming, soaking in water, or using hot tubs during this period.
- Sun Exposure Restraint: Keep your tattoo shielded from direct sunlight for a minimum of 3 weeks. Following this period, ensure to apply sunblock to your tattoo before exposing it to the sun.
- Attire Consideration: Refrain from wearing materials that are abrasive or jewelry that might rub against your tattooed area. Be particularly cautious with footwear that could cause friction.
- Maintain Hygiene: If someone wishes to touch your tattoo, make sure they wash their hands thoroughly beforehand.
- Gym Equipment Awareness: Be cautious when using gym equipment. Prior to usage, ensure that the equipment is thoroughly cleaned to prevent any potential contamination.
